Oh Lizzie

Buckle up.  It's going to be a wild ride . . . At least that's what I was thinking after Lizzie and I (Eric) had the following exchange that occurred in Baylor's dining facility this afternoon:

I yelled from across the room that I needed her to come to me because we were leaving.  Instead of listening, she bolted in the opposite direction.  Not to worry, I'm faster than she is so I pinned her in a corner and picked her up.  She was clearly upset and let me know by slapping me in the face (btw, a 2-year-old's slap hurts the heart more than face).  That, of course, is unacceptable behavior in "my house." So, using my best dad voice, I told her, "You do NOT hit daddy.  Do you understand?"

Instead of responding verbally, she lifted her hand and slowly, ever so slowly, moved it the distance from my shoulder to my cheek.  Yes, she had intentionally slapped me in the face with the slowest slap you can imagine.  She was taunting me.  And, if I'm being honest, it was working.

Needless to say, I was shocked.  But I gathered myself and began to sternly say, "Lizzie, when we get home, I'm going . . ." only I didn't get out anything else because, grabbing me by the head, she pressed her lips against mine and began kissing me on the lips for a good 10 seconds straight.  Seriously.

Caught completely off guard at this point, I wasn't sure what to say.  Should I be stern?  Should I laugh?  So I went with my feeling and told her how sweet she was.  How much I loved her.

Perhaps knowing she had me exactly where she wanted me, she than slapped me in the face again!  Yeah.  She did.

Oh Daddy, sweeet Daddy, for Lizzie's sake, do not let her get away with it, cute as she is.

It is kind of shocking when you first expericne something like that with a little one, but it is a reminder, that they, too, have a sin nature.

It is also a reminder how much Jesus gave for us, how he loved us, and how we mistreated him. And yet, He loved, always doing what was best for man, even when it was hard.

Praise God for His amazing grace to us when we fail to love Him as we should!

Wowzer. Well Eric, I feel for you. Even as I read the post I didn't know whether to be shocked or laugh.

Excited for you all as you make your transition!
