gold

last thursday was diadeloso ("the day of the bear") here at baylor. it is a school holiday where students get a free day, there are fun activities going on throughout the day with games and prizes, and at night there is a free concert in the middle of campus. this year colbie caillat was the final act. while eric diligently worked on his dissertation because he'd like to get a job someday (yes, eric is writing this post), kendel and ezra had the pleasure of cruising around campus playing some of the games. we're still not sure exactly how it happened, but while kendel's back was turned, ezra managed to play a game where he actually won something: a goldfish!

kendel and ezra brought our new "pet" home, put it in a glass, antique flower vase, and placed it in the center of our kitchen table as the new centerpiece. kendel asked ezra, "what is the fish's name." ezra thought and responded, "gold." (we're still working on creativity, but i guess we shouldn't expect too much when his parents name their bunny "bun bun.") the next day, hoping ezra would forget that he had named the fish "gold," kendel once again asked ezra his name. same response, "gold."

everyday since, throughout the day ezra climbs up on the chair and looks intensely at gold. we ask, "what is gold doing, ezra?" he responds, "looking at ezra." their friendship is evident. ezra loves gold, and gold loves ezra. or maybe i should say, gold loved ezra.

fast forward to last night. kendel walks into the kitchen only to find our new centerpiece floating upside down, lifeless. ezra had already gone to bed so we didn't have to deal with it until morning arrived. i'm not sure what i was thinking, but i think i was hoping ezra just wouldn't notice that his new pet was missing when he woke up. he noticed. this morning he became frantic asking, "where's gold, where's gold?" not quite sure how to respond, i said, "gold is hiding." ezra loves hiding games. unfortunately, not this one. almost in hysterics he says, "i need gold!" "i go find gold!" i managed to divert his attention and suggest that we were in a hurry and we would find gold after school (the part about being in a hurry was at least true). he bought it and we soon left for school where he'll be until 2:30.

can you guess where i will be at some point today?

LOVE IT!

Brooks loves the fish aisle but we have so far managed not to give into his fixation with fish.
